| The Egypt Exploration Society has been working at Sais (Sa el-Hagar) in the western Delta since 1997 and has recorded visible archaeological material, mapped the area, carried out an extensive environmental drill augur programme and begun geophysical investigations to look beneath the soil. Test excavations have revealed late Neolithic and early Buto-Maadi phase material (around 4,000-3,700 BC), an extensive Ramesside settlement (ca 1200 BC) and pockets of evidence from the destroyed royal 26th Dynasty city (6th-5th century BC). As a joint mission with the University of Durham, work is continuing to explore the long and chequered history of this important site. | ||||||
