Support our work in 2013-14

The Society is delighted to announce the launch of the 2013-14 Amelia Edwards Projects. This year we are asking you to help us to continue the programme of researching and conserving our uniquely important collection of archival material, and to develop our educational activities in Egypt. The projects are as follows:

  • Re-housing the ‘Early correspondence and papers 1880-1920’
  • A new home for Howard Carter’s Watercolour Paintings
  • The Virtual EES Archive – preservation and access
  • The EES in Arabic – reaching a wider audience in Egypt and beyond
  • EES Scholarships – for Egyptian Egyptologists to travel to the UK

The first two projects will help us to ensure the long-term preservation of some of the most important materials in the archives: the letters written during the earliest period of the Society’s history by Flinders Petrie and Amelia Edwards herself among others, and the collection of watercolour paintings including those of Howard Carter. The third will provide the funding required for a graduate intern to extend the work of cataloguing, indexing and digitising the holdings.

The final two projects demonstrate our strengthening commitment to pursue our educational activities in Egypt despite the present situation. The first will provide support for us to circulate notices, short summaries of our work, and articles from our regular publications etc. in Arabic while the second will allow us to extend the training offered to young Egyptian archaeologists by bringing the brightest over to the UK to make use the libraries, archives and museum collections and to meet colleagues.

All of the Projects are designed to provide a way for us to capitalise on your enthusiasm and support for our work but by giving you the choice of a wide variety of projects, some representing new initiatives we also offer you the opportunity to get involved with our work directly. This is your Society and it is fundamentally important to us to know what you are most enthusiastic about supporting.
