A new Series for your shelves!
The Egypt Exploration Society is home to unique collections of international significance thanks to the work it has undertaken over the past century and more. Our new Spotlight Series will make these collections even more accessible and with additional context provided by expert authors.
The essential backstory of history’s most famous Egyptologist.
The Series launches with Howard Carter: from tracer to Tutankhamun by Carl Graves, Director of the EES. This volume focuses on the largest original watercolour by Howard Carter (EES.ART.224) painted in 1894 when he was just 19 years old and is now on loan from the Society’s archive to the Egypt Centre in Swansea. This Spotlight book provides essential context to the painting by uncovering the life and legacy of Carter, from his early years up to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.
This book provides an excellent overview of the life and career of the most famous Egyptologist, Howard Carter. It is richly illustrated throughout with archival images, and it is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in Egyptology!
The book includes a foreword by Raksha Dave (archaeologist, broadcaster, and President of the Council for British Archaeology) alonside archival images from the EES and Griffith Institute as well as the Peggy Joy Egyptology Library, Rupert Wace, Tony Marks, and Angela Reid. We’re grateful to all for their generous support and, especially, to Winsor & Newton and the Vanellus Trust for funding the first volume in our Spotlight Series. Future volumes will consider other characters in the Society's history such as Amelia Edwards, and also projects we have contirbuted to like Amarna, Armant, Buhen, and many more.
