JEA Editor-in-Chief – expressions of interest sought

We’re looking for a new Editor for our leading Journal

Since its first edition in 1914, the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology has remained the flagship publication of the Egypt Exploration Society and is currently publishing its 110th issue. The Society wishes to ensure that the Journal continues to remain at the forefront of publishing in Egyptology and Egyptian archaeology while also meeting the ongoing challenges posed by open-access and the transition to a mixed print and digital environment.  We are now looking to appoint an Editor-in-Chief.

The successful candidate will be an Egyptologist with a strong background in a broad range of Egyptological and archaeological topics and a proven track-record of producing high-quality research. The role will include:

  • Determining the overall vision and direction of the Journal in consultation with members of the JEA Editorial Board;
  • Communicating with and periodically reviewing the membership of the JEA Editorial Board;
  • Maintaining a high standard of international excellence, a broad interdisciplinary profile, and a commitment to sharing experiences and analysis of ethical issues;
  • Managing the flow of manuscripts through SAGE Track, including reading submitted papers, managing the peer review process, making decisions about rejection, revision and acceptance, and corresponding with authors;
  • Determining the content of each issue, including commissioning of key papers;
  • Commissioning book reviews for the Journal;
  • Ensuring that publication processes, legal requirements (e.g. copyright), and deadlines are met;
  • Checking all proofs and communicating corrections to SAGE;
  • Overseeing the inclusion of an Arabic abstract with each article;
  • Overseeing the Society’s Mentoring for Egyptian and Sudanese Authors (MESA) Scheme
  • Working with the guest editors of any special issues or sections;
  • Promoting the JEA internationally via own networks and e.g., attending conferences;
  • Keeping abreast of developments in the field

The appointed Editor-in-Chief will work closely with the Society’s Managing Editor of the JEA and the JEA Editorial Board to deliver one volume (of two issues) each calendar year to the schedule outlined by our publishing partners, SAGE LtD. The Editor-in-Chief is expected to meet with the JEA Editorial Board when necessary, provide a written report to the Publications and Communications Committee twice per year, and to attend their meetings when requested.

The Editor-in-Chief will report to the Society’s Director and to the Publications and Communications Committee and will be paid an honorarium starting at £3,000 per volume (commensurate with experience) on receipt of invoice. They will be employed on a freelance contract and, as such, will be responsible for paying necessary tax and National Insurance. We do not expect the role to take longer than 3 hours per week, averaged across the year.

The Editor-in-Chief will be appointed on a three-year contract, subject to successful delivery of the tasks outlined above. A probationary period of three months will be reviewed at the outset.

Interested candidates are invited to submit an expression of interest (500 words), with accompanying CV to the Board of Trustees by e-mail ([email protected]), no later than 12:00 (UK) on Friday 13th December 2024. Interviews are planned to be held online in early January 2025.
