Environmental change-driven evolution of cities from the Old Kingdom to the First Intermediate Period

Map of Ancient and Modern Sites located at Bubastis
The cultural history of the Nile Delta is inextricably linked to the climatic and environmental history of north-east Africa and the Mediterranean region. The emergence of provincial cities, such as Buto, Sais, Bubastis and Mendes, was directly influenced by the dynamic river landscape of the Nile Delta, which, in turn, was contingent on supra-regional hydroclimatic conditions. While the archaeological evidence illustrates the development and decay of towns and settlements, geoarchaeological proxy data reflect features and changes in landscapes, climates and ecosystems. The recent integration of environmental-historical information into the archaeology of the Nile Delta has yielded significant new insights into its natural and settlement landscapes. The lecture will visualise the interdependencies between the dynamic hydrogeography of the Nile Delta, the development of provincial towns and how environmental and climatic changes influenced transformation processes of urban societies.
