The conservation and re-use of ancient water systems in the High Mountains of Sinai Peninsula.
Monastery of Cosmos and Damian at Deir Raheb in Wadi el-Tala'a el-Shaghera.
The adaptation to climate change in mountain areas is a multi-faceted process. It entails — not limited to — the regulatory framework, governance structure, spatial planning and financial instruments, and traditional knowledge and heritage assets. Although the inhabitants of arid and semi-arid mountain regions have adapted to unpredictable cyclic drought periods since ancient times, extreme events such as flash floods exert serious hazards and threats to livelihoods. The ancient water systems and their associated knowledge play a key role in adapting to the scarcity or abundance of water resources. Founded on 20-year plus field-survey by Sinai Peninsula Research (SPR), this spotlight lecture discusses the climate change challenge at high-elevation heritage landscapes.
