Historical sources report that ancient Egyptians had very advanced medical practices for the time and that they studied cancer but declared it "untreatable".

We analysed two ancient Egyptian skulls to understand what they were affected by and discovered traces of what could be the first attempt at surgical removal of cancer in history, which is in line with historical sources. Our study also contributes to an evolutionary perspective, providing insights into the relation between lifestyle, cultural, biological, and environmental contexts to approach how cancer has evolved through time and space.
