Recordings will be made available for those unable to attend the live sessions!
We will concentrate on the hieroglyphs of the Middle Kingdom (c. 2000-1600 BCE), but you’ll be able to apply a lot of what you have learnt to monuments from all periods of pharaonic history. In this course, we’ll continue to look at how the Egyptians expressed themselves not just in their funerary monuments, but in literature and elsewhere. The course will be taught by reading actual texts from Middle Egyptian in the hieroglyphic script. We will apply and consolidate the basic grammar that we learnt in the previous course (or elsewhere) and learn new elements of grammar as we come across them. By the end of this course, you will be better equipped to read a wider variety of texts from the Middle Egyptian stage of the Ancient Egyptian language.
This course continues where the EES Intermediate class left off and assumes that you are confident with reading the hieroglyphic writing system, know some basic grammar and that you have at least looked at, even if you didn’t fully understand, the Middle Egyptian verb system. You might have done an intermediate class before or have read a teach-yourself book. Please get in touch with [email protected] if you want to discuss your level. There are no tests or exams but each week, to practise what we have learnt, a simple optional task will be given to do at home.
