For ancient Egypt, the pharaoh was the pivotal figure of the state. Over three millennia, some 300 individuals – most, but not all, males – held the position, and over these two weekends, we will be looking at some of the most significant incumbents. These include both household names and less well-known, but still important, figures in the history of ancient Egypt, from its unification down to its final absorption into the Persian Empire (c. 3000-340 BCE).
These two weekends will provide an overview of ancient Egyptian history through the lens of the careers of a number of the country’s monarchs. These include not only some of the great names, but also some of the unsung heroes (and a few zeroes) of pharaonic history. This will give participants a rounded appreciation of the nature of pharaonic kingship and the ways in which it was manifested over three millennia.
The course is open to everyone, whether they are complete beginners in learning about ancient Egypt or already have some knowledge in the area. No prior knowledge of ancient Egypt is necessary, although a basic understanding of Egyptian chronology and terminology may be useful.
